A single-dose experimental gene therapy has been reported to lower "bad" cholesterol by 52%, according to multiple Arabic-language news outlets including Al Bayan. The reports, published Monday, describe the treatment as a one-time intervention for managing high cholesterol.
The coverage, which draws on early-stage trial data, indicates that the therapy also reduced triglycerides, a type of fat in the blood linked to cardiovascular risk. Al Bayan and other outlets, such as Okaz and Al Khaleej, framed the results as a potential breakthrough for patients with elevated cholesterol who struggle with daily medication regimens.
The treatment is described as an investigational gene therapy, meaning it has not yet been approved for widespread clinical use. The reported 52% reduction in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol—often called "bad" cholesterol—comes from a single administration, which would mark a significant departure from current standard care. Existing treatments, such as statins, typically require daily oral dosing and can be associated with adherence challenges.
